Diversify Your Faculty: A Roadmap for Equitable Hiring Strategies

November 02, 2022

This important contribution, which offers a faculty hiring roadmap that departments can leverage to eliminate many barriers of entry to members of historically excluded groups as faculty in biomedical engineering, was authored by members of a nationwide network of BME women faculty, BME UNITE, of which Chesler was a founder.

Maintaining Inclusion in Engineering in a Post-Dobbs World

October 14, 2022

The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and newly enacted state laws will jeopardize our continued ability to educate, recruit and retain women in engineering and STEM disciplines in which they already are underrepresented and historically marginalized. That will impact engineering prospects nationwide, so we as a profession need to understand how these rulings and laws will affect women, and we need to expand our inclusive practices with intentionality. This opinion piece reviews the likely impact of this decision and strategies for mitigating the effects on diversity and innovation in STEM disciplines.

Chesler and Simpson discuss justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in engineering education

August 24, 2022

That diversity and inclusion are key drivers of innovation and complex problem solving is well known and well accepted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, business, and social sciences. Incorporating the principles and values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusing into engineering education and training is critical to creating the next generation of diverse leaders in engineering.

Citation Diversity Statements in BMES Journals

February 22, 2021

Gender and racial imbalances exist in STEM fields, with the greatest differences at the highest faculty levels. There are myriad causes of these imbalances and as many consequences.  One manifestation of bias in academia is the undercitation of publications authored by women and minoritized groups. The inclusion of a citation diversity statement has been proposed to increase awareness and help correct citation imbalances. Thus we, the authors of this paper who ar editors of Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) journals and Chair of the BMES Publications Board, have decided to include an optional citation diversity statement in our paper formats.  This paper describes our motivation, suggested approach, and hoped for outcomes.

Fund Black Scientists

March 28, 2024

Authored by a nationwide network of BME women faculty, this paper argues that the racial funding disparity by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) remains the most insidious barrier to success of Black faculty in our profession. We focus attention on this critical barrier and suggest solutions on how it can be dismantled.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion - A How-To Guide

March 08, 2019

To accelerate the development of an inclusive culture in biomedical engineering (BME), we must accept complexity, seek to understand our own privilege, speak out about diversity, learn the difference between intent and impact, accept our mistakes, and learn how to engage in difficult conversations. In turn, we will be rewarded by the ideas, designs, devices and discoveries of a new generation of problem solvers and thought leaders who bring diverse experiences and perspectives.
